The Noble Town of Elciego

The origin of the name Elciego is steeped in legend. And legends, understood in their fair value, form part of history.

A legend connects the origins of Elciego with the movement of an old population with a settlement fixed in the vicinity of the chapel of San Vicente, not far from the Ebro. The place was named San Andrés de la Ribera.

Another legendary constituent is that of the inn built by a blind man in the current settlement of the town. From this, possibly, the town could have taken its name.

The first written testimony on Elciego is found in the year 1067, in the Cartulary of San Millán de la Cogolla. It consists of a document in the form of an act of testament by Aznar Díaz de Zieko, written in Latin of the time with a deeply Christian spirit. Translated, it would be as follows:

“In the name of Christ our Redeemer. I, Aznar Díaz de Zieko, moved by the love of God and propelled by the memory of my sins, prepare to freely donate, by the glory of God, something that He has given me so abundantly. Therefore I grant and hand over, in honour of the confessor of God San Emiliano (San Millán), to you Abbot Blasco and to those that live in the Monastery with you, my own palace that I have in Heaven with all its property”
